Un portavoz del partido de Menéndez, Revolución Ciudadana, dijo que se nombrará un sustituto para el cargo de alcalde.

El candidato asesinado a la alcaldía de Puerto López (Ecuador), Omar Menéndez, ganó fácilmente las elecciones del domingo. Menéndez, de 41 años, fue asesinado a tiros por hombres armados que irrumpieron el sábado en la sala donde estaba reunido con trabajadores de la campaña.

Un adolescente que colaboraba en la campaña también murió en el ataque, mientras que otras tres personas resultaron heridas.

Un portavoz del partido de Menéndez, Revolución Ciudadana, dijo que se nombrará un sustituto para el cargo de alcalde.

Las elecciones se celebraron en plena escalada de la delincuencia en la región costera de Ecuador, vinculada a la creciente influencia de violentas bandas de narcotraficantes. Menéndez no fue el único político asesinado en el periodo previo a las elecciones. Dos semanas antes, el candidato a la alcaldía de Salinas, Julio César Farachio, también fue asesinado. Salinas está a unos 70 kilómetros al sur de Puerto López.

Además, candidatos políticos de otras comunidades costeras, como Manta y Esmerladas, han sido blanco de sicarios, dos de ellos heridos de bala.

La policía ha detenido a un sospechoso del asesinato de Farachio, pero afirma que los demás agresores siguen en libertad.

El presidente Guillermo Lasso condenó los asesinatos, diciendo que la violencia de las bandas de narcotraficantes es el "problema número uno de Ecuador." Desde 2021, los índices de asesinatos en las cuatro provincias costeras del país han aumentado hasta un 300%.
