NICARAGUA LIBERA A 222 PRESOS POLITICOS Y LOS ENVIA A EE.UU.

Nicaragua ha liberado a 222 reclusos, muchos de los cuales eran considerados presos políticos del Gobierno del presidente nicaragüense Daniel Ortega, y se dirigen a Estados Unidos, según ha informado un alto funcionario estadounidense.

"Algunos de estos individuos han pasado años en prisión, muchos de ellos por ejercer sus libertades fundamentales, en condiciones horribles y sin acceso al debido proceso", dijo el jueves en un comunicado el funcionario, que habló bajo condición de anonimato.

El gobierno nicaragüense no confirmó de inmediato la liberación.

El Secretario de Estado de Estados Unidos, Antony Blinken, que dijo que había un ciudadano estadounidense entre los presos liberados, acogió con satisfacción su liberación como un "paso constructivo" para hacer frente a los abusos contra los derechos humanos en Nicaragua.

La medida también "abre la puerta a un mayor diálogo entre Estados Unidos y Nicaragua sobre cuestiones de interés", declaró Blinken en un comunicado.

El New York Times informó de que el gobierno estadounidense envió un avión a la capital nicaragüense, Managua, para trasladar a los presos liberados a Washington DC. Se espera que el vuelo llegue hacia el mediodía hora local (17:00 GMT).

La administración del presidente estadounidense, Joe Biden, denunció la votación, en la que Ortega obtuvo un cuarto mandato consecutivo, como una "farsa", y Washington y sus aliados han acumulado nuevas sanciones contra el gobierno de Managua.

Muchos de los detenidos han sido condenados a largas penas de prisión, a menudo acusados de "conspiración para socavar la integridad nacional".

En junio del año pasado, la entonces directora de Derechos Humanos de la ONU, Michelle Bachelet, afirmó que la situación en Nicaragua se estaba deteriorando debido a las detenciones arbitrarias, las duras condiciones de reclusión, la falta de garantías procesales, el aumento del control estatal sobre instituciones académicas y organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro, y las restricciones a la libertad de asociación.

"Insto encarecidamente al gobierno de Nicaragua a que cumpla sus obligaciones en materia de derechos humanos y no se aleje más de ellas. Hago un llamamiento a las autoridades para que pongan fin de inmediato a políticas que hoy sólo sirven para aislar al país y a su pueblo de las comunidades regional e internacional", afirmó.

El jueves, el alto funcionario de la administración Biden dijo que EE.UU. facilitó el transporte de los liberados al país, donde serán puestos en libertad condicional por razones humanitarias durante un periodo de dos años.

El funcionario dijo que el gobierno estadounidense consideró la liberación masiva como un paso positivo por parte de Nicaragua, y agregó que todos los que abandonaron el país centroamericano lo hicieron voluntariamente y recibirán asistencia médica y legal a su llegada a Estados Unidos.
