Los equipos de rescate polacos que trabajan en Turquía declararon que hasta el momento habían sacado con vida de entre los escombros a nueve personas, entre ellas padres con dos hijos y una niña de 13 años.

Los escasos equipos de rescate trabajaron durante toda la noche del miércoles sacando vivos y muertos de entre los escombros de miles de edificios destruidos en Turquía y Siria por los catastróficos terremotos y réplicas que han causado más de 11.000 muertos.

En medio de llamamientos al gobierno turco para que envíe más ayuda a la zona de la catástrofe, el Presidente turco Recep Tayyip Erdogan visitó una "ciudad de tiendas de campaña" en Kahramanmaras, donde viven personas obligadas a abandonar sus hogares. Reconoció las carencias iniciales de la respuesta turca a la catástrofe, pero prometió que nadie se quedaría "en la calle".

Turquía cuenta ya con decenas de miles de efectivos de ayuda en la zona del terremoto, según informó la Autoridad de Gestión de Desastres (AFAD) a la agencia de noticias Reuters, a los que se han unido equipos de búsqueda de más de dos docenas de países. Pero con la devastación tan extendida, muchos siguen esperando ayuda.

En la ciudad turca de Malatya, los cadáveres estaban colocados unos junto a otros en el suelo, cubiertos con mantas, mientras los equipos de rescate esperaban a que los vehículos funerarios los recogieran, según el ex periodista Ozel Pikal, que vio cómo sacaban ocho cuerpos de entre las ruinas de un edificio.

"Hoy no es un día agradable, porque a partir de hoy no queda esperanza en Malatya", dijo Pikal a The Associated Press por teléfono. "Nadie está saliendo vivo de los escombros".

Pikal dijo que el edificio de un hotel se derrumbó en la ciudad y que más de 100 personas podrían estar atrapadas.

Dijo que había escasez de rescatistas en la zona en la que se encontraba, y que el frío, el cierre de carreteras y los daños en la región también han impedido la movilidad y el acceso.
